History in Year 1

In Year 1, students will begin their historical journey learning about toys in living memory. They will focus on the concepts of continuity and change and similarity and difference as they explore the toys they play with and those of older relatives (such as grandparents). Students will think about why toys have changed over time, looking at specific examples such as teddy bears and dolls.

During the spring, children will discover all about what significance is and how people's actions in the past can be called significant. We pride ourselves in studying a range of people from different walks of life, each contributing to society in different ways. Across the unit, students will explore the impacts that Mary Seacole, Edward Jenner, Walter Tull, Gandhi and Helen Keller have had on Britain and the wider world.

During the summer term, the children will look at the history of our very own school! In this unit, they will analyse sources to see any similarities and differences between the school now and the school of the past, looking at aspects such as the building and the uniform. Children will also look at how a Victorian classroom differs from today and will begin to think about why these changes have occurred.
