Our art units

  • Important elements in our art units

  • Exploration of media and techniques – Opportunities to use a variety of tools and materials (e.g. paint, pencil, collage, clay) to develop different skills.

  • Knowledge of artists, designers, and craftspeople – Learning about diverse artists from different times, places, and cultures to inspire and broaden perspectives.

  • Development of key skills – Building on drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed-media work, with increasing complexity across year groups.

  • Creativity and imagination – Space for pupils to experiment, take risks, and express their own ideas.

  • Vocabulary and language – Introducing and using subject-specific language to describe techniques, materials, and artistic effects.

  • Evaluation and reflection – Encouraging children to talk about their work and that of others, recognising strengths and considering improvements.

  • Links to other curriculum areas – Making purposeful connections with topics in history, geography, science, and literacy where relevant.

  • Progressive skill development – Sequenced learning that builds confidence and capability over time, revisiting and extending previous knowledge.

  • Cultural awareness and diversity – Including art from a wide range of cultures and traditions to promote respect and understanding.

  • Presentation and celebration – Opportunities to display and share work, fostering pride and a sense of achievement.
