Fluency

Fluency in reading is a vital stepping stone to children becoming confident, independent readers. When pupils can read smoothly, accurately, and with expression, they can focus on understanding the text rather than decoding each word. This makes reading more enjoyable and opens the door to a wider world of knowledge, imagination, and learning across the curriculum.

Parents can support by:

  • Listening to their child read regularly and encouraging re-reading of favourite books to build speed and confidence.

  • Modelling expressive reading by sharing stories aloud together.

  • Talking about the meaning of new words and discussing the story to deepen understanding.

  • Making reading part of everyday life—signs, recipes, instructions, and labels all count.

A little daily practice, shared with encouragement and praise, can make a big difference to both fluency and a lifelong love of reading.
