British Values

At Cradley, British Values are woven through our curriculum, relationships, daily interactions and wider school experiences. They are not taught as isolated concepts, but lived out through our vision of “Believe, belong, be happy; every child, every chance, every day” and our values of belonging, caring, trust, resilience, perseverance and courage. We aim to develop children who understand their role within a diverse community, respect others, make positive choices and contribute thoughtfully to the world around them.

Through our curriculum, pupils explore key aspects of British Values in meaningful contexts. In history, they consider democracy, rights, fairness and how societies have changed over time. In geography, they develop respect for different communities, cultures and ways of life, recognising both similarities and differences. In RE and collective worship, pupils explore beliefs, values and moral questions, developing understanding and respect for others’ faiths and viewpoints. Across English, pupils encounter a wide range of voices and perspectives, supporting empathy, discussion and the ability to consider ideas that may differ from their own. RHSE education and wider wellbeing work support pupils in understanding themselves, managing relationships, resolving conflict and making responsible decisions.

Democracy is promoted through opportunities for pupils to have a voice and influence their school community, including pupil leadership, class discussions, pupil feedback and involvement in decision-making. Children learn that their opinions matter, while also recognising the importance of listening respectfully to others and reaching shared decisions.

The rule of law is reinforced through our consistent expectations, behaviour systems and emphasis on fairness and responsibility. Pupils understand that rules help keep everyone safe, happy and included. Through restorative conversations and reflection, children are encouraged to understand the impact of their actions and make positive choices.

Individual liberty is developed by helping pupils grow in confidence, independence and self-belief. Children are encouraged to express their ideas, make thoughtful choices and pursue their interests, while understanding the importance of respecting the choices and freedoms of others.

Mutual respect and tolerance are central to life at Cradley. Through relationships, curriculum experiences, celebrations, collective worship and community links, pupils learn to value diversity and appreciate the experiences of others. Our focus on caring and belonging helps children understand that everyone has a place in our school community.

Through SMSC development, pupils are given opportunities to reflect on moral choices, spirituality, identity, relationships and their place in the wider world. Collective worship provides regular opportunities to explore values, consider big questions, celebrate achievements and reflect on how we can live out our shared principles.

The strongest teaching of British Values happens through the everyday culture of Cradley: the way adults model respect, kindness and fairness; the way pupils are encouraged to care for each other; and the way we work together as a community. By embedding these values throughout school life, we support children to become compassionate, resilient and responsible citizens who believe in themselves, belong to their community and have every chance to flourish.
