Science in EYFS

In our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Science is taught through the Understanding the World area of learning, where children are encouraged to explore, investigate, question and make sense of the world around them. Through hands-on experiences, meaningful play and real-life opportunities, children develop curiosity, awe and wonder as they begin their journey as young scientists.

Children are given opportunities to observe changes, explore natural materials, investigate living things, talk about the weather and seasons, and discover how and why things work. Through these experiences, they learn to ask questions, make predictions, notice patterns, and share their ideas with others. Science is embedded throughout our indoor and outdoor environments, enabling children to learn through exploration, experimentation and discovery every day.

Our approach to Science strongly reflects our school mission statement: "Believe, Belong, Be Happy – Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day."

  • Believe – We encourage children to be confident learners who are willing to ask questions, try new things and develop resilience when investigating and solving problems.
  • Belong – Children work collaboratively, sharing ideas and discoveries with their peers, developing respect for each other's thoughts and contributions.
  • Be Happy – Learning is engaging, practical and enjoyable, fostering excitement and a lifelong love of learning about the world around them.
  • Every Child – We provide inclusive opportunities that enable all children to access and enjoy scientific exploration, regardless of their starting points.
  • Every Chance – Rich experiences, visits, visitors and outdoor learning opportunities broaden children's understanding and inspire curiosity.
  • Every Day – Scientific thinking is woven throughout daily routines and play experiences, allowing children to continually observe, question and explore.

By nurturing curiosity and encouraging children to investigate the world around them, we lay strong foundations for future scientific learning while helping children develop the confidence, communication skills and critical thinking needed to become enthusiastic and capable learners.
