This week at Cradley...

Significant learning moments across our school this week have been:

Reception have been planting flowers and beans this week. They have been looking at different types of flowers and have enjoyed sketching from close observation. Year 1 have been tasting Handa's 7 delicious fruits and describing them using adjectives while in Year 2 pupils have been studying Cradley's local history of chain making.

Year 3 have enjoyed doing observational drawings of a range of Mayan masks and Year 4 have really enjoyed playing tag rugby. In a creative twist to learning in science, Year 5 have been recreating the phases of the moon Jaffa Cake advert with Jaffa Cakes and chocolate biscuits!  Meanwhile, Year 6 have worked hard in athletics try outs to build a team ready for Halesowen District Sports.

Collective Worship

In this week's worship, we explored how Jesus' disciples were feeling in the aftermath of his death and resurrection.  Despite Jesus appearing to his disciples on two occasions, their lives and purpose felt changed.  There may have been feelings of confusion, and questions around 'what next?' for them.  Many returned to their previous professions.  For them it may have felt like a time of being in limbo.

While some of them, including Peter, Thomas and Nathanael, had gone out fishing, Jesus appeared to them from the shore of the Sea of Galilee. they caught nothing that night but in the morning, a man stood on the shore shouted to them, "Cast your nets on the other side of the boat."  When they did this, their haul was so large they struggled to pull in their nets.  Peter realised that the man on the shore was Jesus.

As they returned to shore, Jesus had lit a fire and said, "Come and have breakfast."  This was the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples.

For Peter, it is likely that his feelings were mixed; joy at seeing his Lord mingled with the shame and guilt having denied Jesus three times before his death.  But Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love me?" three times, almost cancelling out Peter's three denials.  Jesus went on to tell Peter to "take care of my sheep," and "feed my sheep,". Despite Peter's mistakes, Jesus showed that he still loved him and still had purpose for his future.

Jesus saw Peter's potential, his strength, and who he could become. Just like Peter, we are not defined by our worst moment—we are shaped by what we choose next.

Sometimes we might think:

  • “I’m not good at this”

  • “I’ve messed up too many times”

  • “I can’t do it”

But this story reminds us:

We are all capable of more than we think.

  • More kindness

  • More courage

  • More responsibility

  • More growth

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you that we are created in Your image and You have put so much potential in each of us,

May we have the courage to try again, and the perseverance to keep going,
knowing we are never alone.

Amen.

Cradley Book Week

As part of our drive to foster a love of reading, we are having a Book Week, beginning on Monday 27th April.

Theatre Company

On Wednesday 29th April, the Image Travelling Theatre Company are coming into school to perform ‘Dr Dolittle.’  The cost of the Theatre is £3.00.  This is a voluntary contribution, however if costs cannot be met, then this event may not go ahead.

Book Fair

We will be having a visit from ‘The Travelling Book Fair’ on Wednesday 29th April, Thursday 30th April and Friday 1st May.  The Book Fair has a wide range of exciting, quality books for you to purchase with lots of special offers, including 3 for 2 on all books (not including stationery items.) The commission from sales allows us to buy more books for the classrooms and school library, so please come and support the school.  The book fair will be open for you to buy books after school from 3.15pm on the above days.  Please note that the book fair will be cashless, so remember to bring your mobile phones and credit/debit card details with you.  Details of how to purchase books will be sent out nearer the time.

Design a Character Competition

We are also running a Design a Character Competition with a grand prize of a £5 voucher for the book fair.  Simply turn a kitchen or toilet roll into a book character of your choice! Please bring your named character into your class by Wednesday 29th April, if you wish to take part.

Dress to Impress Day

On Friday 1st May it will be our ‘cosy reader’ / ‘dress to impress’ day. Enjoying reading is the most important thing rather than spending money on costumes. Children are invited either to dress as a book character or to wear comfortable clothes. Enjoying books is the most important thing.

Booknic (only Reception, Y1 and Y2)

On Friday 1st May, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are also holding a ‘Booknic’.  We would like to invite one adult to come and read books with their child from 2.30pm.  Bring along a blanket and enjoy some of our books and a biscuit. The Booknic will be held outside weather permitting but in the event of rain, we will enjoy our books in the classroom.

Scavenger Hunt (Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6)

During the week, the children will also be taking part in a Reading Scavenger Hunt.

We apologise for our oversight in communicating about these events at short notice.
